I didn't dislike the characters for just being different from the book, I disliked them because they were unlikable.Īlso "whoever made that happen" was Terry Pratchett himself. But the fundamental changes are all things that can be conveyed in film. It felt more that Mpist changed because it was more convenient and got him the girl. There was no death of Alfred Spangler leading to the "birth" of Moist von Lipwig. The overarching theme of hope really wasn't present. Her character was also cold and callous ratter than aloof and cynical, I still hold Adora would never act so coldly toward golems as she did in the movie, and she became unlikable for it. But she was so free with voicing her every thought and motive that I feel I know her character better than Moist's in the film.

This should be easier to convey in a movie when there's no narrative to give the audience more insight. His character lost all the charm as a villain.Īdora Belle was so interesting in the book because she was difficult to read since we never heard what she was thinking. Gilt was muddled down to just being an evil person with an eyepatch.

There was no conflict between Moist admiring Gilt as the master of the con and learning how to beat him for an "honest" cause. As I said in my post, I understood there's going to be differences and I appreciate them when the story is still a good one (like I said how I loved the Hogfather film) but the GP movie changed the core of the characters themselves. His character goes from being the charming con man who convinces Adora Belle to dance with him, to someone who literally picks her up and drags her back when she tries to leave. Without the golden suit there's nothing to actually substantiate Moist making himself believe he's "playing the long con" rather than actually changing as a person, trying to still have that mask to hide behind. They also didn't change "a few things." They changed everything that was fundamental about the story. (so much more than those damned Stan Lee cameos). He is important and needs to be seen/known. Plus, and most importantly, Sir Terry at the end, delivering the mail. These are the differences between books and movies. Adora's smoking being some sort of moral crux. The door to a bottomless hole in V.'s office. I still enjoy imagining her when I read the books. OMG, Nailed it.Įven now, the actress who played Angua. I so enjoyed his acting.Ĭharles Dance as Vetinari. When he went off in search of the buried money in a trance. I'd only seen Richard Coyle in Coupling and he was a riot. The movie was very different and what i most loved was the casting. Ive also listened to the Stephen Briggs audio. It is So different from the book, but in lies the assets. Yank here and, I really enjoyed Going Postal.
